Volleyball
Jamboree Guidelines
1. Volleyball is a gender-specific sport.
2. Teams: B teams are for grade 6 and absolute beginners. Teams will be comprised of your school's smallest students and very unskilled players. Schools should expect other B teams to be mostly 6th grade students. To win games is not one of the reasons to play in the B division. The remaining girls and boys will be assigned to A teams. Any student can be on A teams.
3. Net height will be 2.24 meters for MS Boys Volleyball and 2.13 meters for MS Girls Volleyball.
4. Games will be 22 minutes with a minimum of 5 minutes between games. Each team will be scheduled for three games at each jamboree.
5. Ensure all game balls meet official game requirements
6. Opening possession will be determined using rock-paper-scissors
7. Sets to 25 points, win by 2 points; teams will start a new set if time remains
8. Rules of Emphasis
a. No obvious carries: hand open behind the head when moving the ball forward (looks like a throw)
b. No obvious lifts (catch and throw)
c. No double hits (an underhand pass that hits the arms then the body does not count as a double hit)
d. No touching the net
e. No stepping over line under net
f. After 5 consecutive serves by one server, serving team must rotate to continue the serve
g. No back row spiking in front of the 10 ft line (estimate if lines not marked)
h. Servers must wait for the whistle and stay behind the end line (some discretion on half courts)
i. On serves, smaller players may cross the end line or start 1-2 meters in front of it to match their ability
j. On serves, the receiving team cannot block or make an attack on the serve at the net
k. Foot Faults
Players on B Teams may step in front of the serving line in order to successfully complete their serve. Foot faults will not be called in B games.
Foot fault violations will be called during all A Team games.
l. Rotation violations will result in a side-out
m. A player must wait 6 rotations before they can serve again
n. In cases of overhead interference, play can continue if the side that hit the ball has hits remaining; walls will always be called out
o. Triple Ball Style of Play
This style of play will be used for all B level games at all jamborees.
The game follows a sequence of three rallies (served ball, tossed ball 1, tossed ball 2)
1st rally - introduced by the server
2nd rally - introduced by a tossed ball directed to the receiving team
3rd rally - introduced by a tossed ball directed to the serving team
The service alternates between teams after each three-ball sequence.
A team must rotate and introduce a new server when it is their turn to serve.
Each server only serves once, when it is their turn in the service rotation.
To improve the flow of the game, each team should provide a ball retriever who collects the ball from the athletes.
Guidelines for Tossers
Tossers are positioned on the same side of the court as the Referee.
A coach, assistant coach or a competent volunteer can toss the ball to their team and can step into the court to do so. The tosser will immediately move off the court after the toss.
The tosser MAY NOT ‘coach’ (provide instruction/cheer/call timeouts/make substitutions) while in the role of the tosser. The tosser assumes a role similar to that of the lines people, that is, fulfill their responsibility as an interested observer.
The tosser DOES NOT converse with the Referee or the scorekeepers.
Balls are tossed underhand, with two hands and little to no spin, above the height of the antennae to allow athletes time to play the ball.
The ball will always be tossed directly to the player in position six (6), otherwise a replay will occur. Reminder: Position 6 is a minimum of 2m behind the ‘attack’ line (also known as the 3m line). The toss is a ‘simulated’ serve, NOT a free-ball.
The ball will be tossed once the front row players are at the net (ready to transition) and all athletes have been verbally told that the ball is being introduced, “Ball in!”. Tossers encourage a fast paced transition between the end of a rally and the next toss. As soon as a rally ends and the ball is safely off of the court, the next toss should be initiated.
Players must play the tossed ball with a forearm pass. All infractions will result in a point being awarded. It will be treated in the same manner as using an overhead pass on serve receive.
If the first contact, after a toss/serve, goes over the net, it is considered a legal contact and the point will be played out. No re-serve or re-toss is required.
Scoring
Every ball introduced (served or tossed) is worth 1 point.
Rotation
There is no specialization for positions. Players switching to a different from their service order during a rally is not allowed.
KAIAC Championship Guidelines
i. Each school will determine the eligibility for the members of its team. Teams may have a maximum of 12 players.
ii. Teams will play one set to 25 points, win by two.
a. The championship match will be played best 2 out of 3 sets to 25 points rally scoring. The winning team must take the set by 2 points. A deciding third set will be played to 15 points rally scoring. Again, the winning team must take the set by 2 points. The final score has no ceiling. (August 2024)
iii. Results will be recorded on a whiteboard or other visible display throughout pool play.
iv. Each team will be given one timeout per game to use anytime during the set.
v. Teams will have unlimited substitutions.
vi. Teams will be allowed to use a libero.
vii. Net height will be 2.24 meters for MS Boys Volleyball and 2.13 meters for MS Girls Volleyball.
viii. Opening serve will be determined by rock-paper-scissors.
b. Rules of Emphasis
i. There is no 5-serve limit.
ii. Foot faults will be called on serves in games played on regulation courts without space restrictions. When a smaller court is used, there are no foot faults on serves. Players will be allowed their full serving motion, but must start as far back as possible.
iii. The ball will be ruled out in all cases of overhead or wall interference.
iv. No obvious carries: hand open behind the head when moving the ball forward (looks like a throw)
v. No obvious lifts (catch and throw)
vi. No double hits (an underhand pass that hits the arms then the body does not count as a double hit)
vii. No touching the net
viii. No stepping over line under net
ix. No back row spiking in front of the 10 ft line
x. Servers must wait for the whistle before serving
xi. On serves, the receiving team cannot block or make an attack on the serve at the net
xii. A player must wait 6 rotations before they can serve again
xiii. Rotation violations will result in a side-out
xiv. Ceiling Rule (May 2024)
A ball hitting the ceiling or other overhead obstruction (lights, fan, ducts, supports, or basketball hoop lying horizontally) above a playable area shall remain in play provided the ball contacts the ceiling or obstruction on the side of the net that is occupied by the team that last played the ball.
If after contacting the ceiling or other overhead obstruction the ball crosses the net to the other side it is a dead ball.
If the ball lands, bounces, or sits on top of an obstruction it is a dead ball.
A ball is out of bounds and becomes dead when it:
Touches any part of a backboard or its supports hanging in a vertical position
Makes contact with the side or back walls
Makes contact with the curtain
